ISSM Meeting Prizes

The International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM) is proud to recognize outstanding contributions in the field of sexual medicine through our prestigious ISSM Meeting Prizes. These awards celebrate excellence in research, innovation, and academic achievement, honoring those who push the boundaries of knowledge in our field. The ISSM Meeting Prizes include:

ISSM Journal Best Paper Prize: Awarded for the best paper published in one of our ISSM journals, recognizing groundbreaking research that significantly advances our understanding of sexual health.

Abstract Prizes: Given in various categories, these prizes honor the best abstracts presented at the ISSM meetings, showcasing exceptional research and innovative approaches in sexual medicine.

Emil Tanagho Prize: Named after the esteemed urologist, this prestigious prize is awarded to the best innovative abstract that has the potential to significantly impact the field of sexual medicine.

ISSM Journal Best Paper Prize


The ISSM Journal Best Paper Prizes are designed to honor the most outstanding contributions to the field of sexual medicine. As part of our ISSM Meeting Prizes, we offer prestigious awards for outstanding papers published in our esteemed journals: The Journal of Sexual Medicine, Sexual Medicine Open Access, and Sexual Medicine Reviews.

Criteria for defining the Journal Best Paper

Scientific Rigor: We look for papers that showcase meticulous and robust scientific methods.

Impactful Contributions: Papers that significantly advance scientific, clinical, and societal understanding are prioritized.

Clarity and Organization: Well-written and logically structured papers that adhere to our submission guidelines catch our eye.

Ethical Standards: We ensure that all selected papers follow ethical guidelines and protect research participants. 

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): We value research that incorporates diverse perspectives and methodologies.

Innovation: Papers that introduce novel topics, methodologies, diagnoses, or outcomes are highly valued.

Eligibility and nominations


Eligible manuscripts are published between August 2, 2023, and August 1, 2024.
Associate Editor (AE) nominates 2-3 standout papers and The Editors-in-Chief (EiC) then select the final candidates.

Prizes and recognition

Each journal of the ISSM Family of Journals, The Journal of Sexual Medicine, Sexual Medicine Open Access, and Sexual Medicine Reviews, will award three prizes:

  • GOLD PRIZE USD 1000

  • SILVER PRIZE USD 750

  • BRONZE PRIZE USD 500


Award Ceremony


At the 25th World Meeting on Sexual Medicine 2024 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from September 26 to 29 award ceremony will take place. Prizes will be presented on different days to give each winner their moment in the spotlight.

Our global World Meeting on Sexual Medicine will serve as the perfect stage to acknowledge and showcase the remarkable achievements of our esteemed authors.

To receive the prize, it is required that at least one of the authors is an ISSM Member and attends the World Meeting on Sexual Medicine in person.

ISSM Emil Tanagho Prize

Granted an award of USD 2,500

For the best innovative research presented during the WMSM (based on abstract submissions)

Dr. Emil Tanagho was a formal Chairman of the Department of Urology at University of California, San Francisco, USA. He is a pioneer in neurourology, urodynamics and bladder reconstruction. He mentored many prominant members of ISSM including Wayne Hellstrom, Gregory Broderick, Gerald Brock, Serge Carrier, and Tom Lue. After the ISSM meeting in San Francisco, Tom Lue proposed to the ISSM executive committee to establish the Tanagho Prize to encourage investigators to continue the scientific exploration of physiology and pathophysiology of sexual dysfunction as well as innovations in diagnosis and treatment.
